Adventure for some is surfing or caving.  But there was one adventure that was universal, you could go to it or call it. The MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE... It's location was world wide --- dial the number and you were there -- or go visit  the phone box --- that was miles  and miles from civilization.  The phone booth was located in a desert where the world ended!

DID E.T. PHONE IN, OR LISTEN IN? WHO KNOWS? (WINK-WINK).

MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE -- It was an adventure to get to the location, it was in the middle of nowhere.  To call from the phone was a thrill.  From around the world people would ring the phone box in hopes that somebody was the phone that was located at the edge of the world.  Yes, that is where the phone too was located -- at the edge of civilization or at the edge of the galaxy. When the phone rang, one never knew who was calling in, that caller could be form any part of the USA or from any country in the world.  The good energy that came from this place -- the MOJAVE DESERT PHONE was incredible. The BEACH BOY's song GOOD VIBRATIONS -- or part of the tune would sum up this phone cubicle. People that called in and called out were infected by the good vibe.

Through the decades the graffiti was erased by way of the elements.  The sun, wind, sand, and torrential (RARE) desert rain storm would scrub the structure clean.  Also trekkers to the site (SOME OF THEM) would clean the beams.  Some trekkers left gifts to the iconic MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE. Of course most that got to this payphone put their JOHN HANCOCK on the steel frame.  (STUFFED ANIMALS -BOOKS - CANDLES, WATCHES, PLASTIC FLOWERS, SIGNS, etc) that left at the phone box were either blown away by the harsh desert winds, or taken by pilgrims.  The icon was constantly being gifted in the late 1990s by adventurers who read on the internet that at the edge of the world there was a a desert and a telephone. In my opinion it was only right that the MA BELL CONTRAPTION was honored by those that had soul...  Prior to the late 1990s, the phone booth's location was known to very few, consequently the phone booth was not adorned as it should have been... The mindset of desert rats like me and others (BIKERS- VW PEOPLE -- JEEPSTERS  -- BAJA BUG FANS) was put your name on the frame, make a few phone calls and see if anybody calls this isolated desert phone while one is there.  But once the WORD GOT OUT -- this magical place was called more and more from people from around the world and visited by those that had adventure in their heart.  During the end of the phone booth's era and before it was a world wide icon, there were some bad guys who  shot up the cubicle or did bad things as in destroying the glass and plastic of the booth. For the most part the Oblong box was respected.  Near the turn of he century, the MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE became a placard of decals -- and I WAS HERE  SIGNATURES. Plus all kinds presents and knick knacks were left on or in the booth.  The guy who made this all possible  -- as in letting the world know about this MAGICAL place was DOC DANIEL's... Myself, and I am sure others thought about writing a book about the MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE, but we did not ---DOC DID!  SO buy his book, (Scroll Down) --- maybe one day I will write a book about the magical era of when there was a telephone booth that stood in the middle of nowhere that was filled or haunted with good vibes  ---it was ---- the PORTAL TO ANOTHER WORLD.  Rather like the 1960s Star Trek portal episode -- "THE CITY ON THE EGE OF FOREVER"... To Doc Daniel's credit, he did what I and other Desert riders did not (WE WERE TOO IGNORANT) -- he let the world know about this unique place and let the world ENJOY this locale (ENCHANTED) MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE.    Unfortunately some evil dark hearts by way of BLM -- had this beautiful place destroyed on May 17, 2000.  ARRG! But while this place existed -- it was -- like something out of  --- TALES  A GENIE --- MAGIC WAS THERE...

The MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE became a counter culture icon, people left their mark,  by way of signature or decals.  The structure was honored with phone books from other states, candles, change, stuffed animals, signs, etc...

BELOW: A FUN READ -- BY THE MAN (DOC DANIELS) WHO LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT A PHONE BOOTH THAT STOOD AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD. CLICK ON PHOTO --ORDER A BOOK FROM DOC ---

Doc Daniel's was a fellow explorer who found the phone booth in the late 1990s.  He wrote about this unique place in his book, "ADVENTURES WITH THE MOJAVE PHONE BOOTH."  Doc was the man who let the world know about this place by way of his internet posting.  The telephone box became a celebrity.  I and other DESERT BIKERS or VW BUG -- BAJA BUG people never wrote about the phone booth, but we did hold it dear to our hearts. Maybe one day I or one of "THE OLD BREED" will write about this place... But DOC -- HAS, click on the photo below or (2 ROCKET photos right) and go to his order page ---  the now long gone phone booth should be celebrated.  Doc, in his own way captures some of the GOOD energy that was at this place.  At this phone booth time stood still and the world phoned in. After buying Doc's book -- come back to my website... ALL KINDS OF THAAANGS here.

DESERT LORE: SOME CREATIVE REPEAT VISITORS TO THE MPB,(DOC DANIELS)  SHOT A ROCKET OFF FROM THE MOJAVE PHONE BOOTH.  LEGEND HAS IT, ATTACHED TO THE MISSILE  ON SOME LAUNCHES WAS A CAMERA. THESE BLASTOFFS WERE DONE MANY YEARS BEFORE THERE WERE DRONES WITH CAMERAS. A BIRD's EYE VIEW OF THE AREA AROUND THE DESERT PHONE BOOTH WERE CAPTURED. THE ROCKET WAS REUSABLE; AFTER HITTING ITS ZENITH AND OUT OF POWER, A PARACHUTE WOULD DEPLOY AND THE CRAFT WOULD SETTLE BACK TO EARTH. ONE DAY, THE ROCKET DRIFTED ON LANDING AND WAS LOST IN THE DUNES OR SCRUBS. SADLY THE ROCKET WAS NEVER FOUND. MORE THAN LIKELY THE LOST MISSILE HAS DETERIORATED INTO NOTHING, BY WAY OF THE HARSH DESERT WEATHER. OR THE LOST ROCKET WAS DRAGGED INTO A BURROW BY SOME LARGE RODENT.  OR SOME  VISITOR TO THE MOJAVE-DESERT-PHONE FOUND IT, AWAY FROM THE BOOTH, AND KEPT IT.
